Cheshire Phoenix vs DBL Sheffield Sharks – PREVIEW

by Vlad Ionasc

Cheshire Phoenix (11-12) host the Sheffield Sharks (12-11) at the Cheshire Oaks Arena on Sunday 17thMarch in what will be a crucial game for Phoenix’s play-off ambitions.

The Nix could tighten their grip on a play-off spot and put pressure on the Sharks with a win on Sunday. The Sharks have won both meetings against the Phoenix this season, but the Nix will be determined to get one over their opponents.

Sheffield Sharks have lost five out of their last six games, but it will certainly not be an easy task for the Nix on Sunday. The visitors will have plenty of fire power, Dirk Williams and Christopher Alexander rank second and third respectively in points-per-game. Williams also currently leads the league in three-pointers made with 68 so the Nix defenders will have to do a very good job guarding the perimeter in order to limit Williams to minimal impact.

Cheshire Phoenix did not have a good February, but they certainly started the month of March with a bang. The Nix defeated eventual BBL Trophy champions, the London City Royals 88-82, while only having six players fit. It was a magnificent effort from the team, with a spectacular individual performance from Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan which earned him BBL Team of the Week honours.

Momcilo Latinovic has made 61 three pointers this season, second only to Dirk Williams, but he was only able to score two points in the last meeting between the two teams, shooting 0-5 from three-point land. He will be looking to improve on Sunday and the Phoenix will need him to be splashing threes all night in order for the team to have a higher chance of winning the game. Coach Ben Thomas will also be looking for C.J. Gettys, a player that the Sharks are yet to face this season, to continue rebounding at a high rate while also remaining active at both ends of the floor. New acquisition, Connor Murtagh, is expected to make his debut for the Nix on Sunday.

BRING THE NOISE! GO PHOENIX!
