Cheshire Phoenix vs Leicester Riders – PREVIEW
by Vlad Ionasc
Cheshire Phoenix’s (12-13) quest for the play-offs will continue when they face off against the Leicester Riders (18-6) on the 29th March.
The Nix will be hoping to get back to winning ways on Friday night, after they suffered a defeat against the visiting Newcastle Eagles last time out. Just like their previous opponents, the Riders will undoubtedly give the Phoenix a tough game. The home side have the second best record in the league.
The Riders finished their three-game road trip with a win over the Surrey Scorchers and will be hoping to take that momentum into the game against the Phoenix. The hosts also won the previous meeting against the Nix this season, 76-69.
JR Holder will be the danger man for the Riders, he is averaging 14.6 points-per-game, more than any other player on Leicester’s roster. Conner Washington is also a player that the Nix defence will have to look out for. He is Leicester’s main distributor and also an excellent three-point shooter. He is currently shooting 46% from beyond the arc for the season.
The Nix turned the ball over 17 times against the Eagles and only scored nine second chance points despite grabbing 12 offensive rebounds. Ben Thomas’ team will need to improve on those aspects of the game if they want to get the win in Leicester. Jalen Hayes had himself a game, as he shot 7-11 from the field, had 0 turnovers and also contributed with four rebounds and two assists. More of the same will be needed from Hayes on Friday night.
The Nix could make a statement by winning on the road against one of the toughest teams in the league and improve their record to 13-13. With the play-offs just around the corner, every win is now priceless for the Cheshire Phoenix.
