Cheshire Phoenix vs Manchester Giants – PREVIEW

Cheshire Phoenix vs Manchester Giants – PREVIEW

by Vlad Ionasc

Cheshire Phoenix (13-16) will face off against the Manchester Giants (13-17) at the Cheshire Oaks Arena on the 19th April.

Both teams are battling for the elusive 8th spot that would take them into the Play-Offs. Bristol Flyers are the other side involved in the race for the final play-off spot.

The Nix will look to end their three-game losing streak when they meet the Giants. Friday’s visitors have been very inconsistent in their last few games, they haven’t won back-to-back matches since January. Rest will once again be on Phoenix’s side, the Giants play against the Sheffield Sharks just 42 hours before travelling to the Cheshire Oaks Arena.

The Nix will have to play incredible defence to stop Giants’ star Willie Clayton. The 6’8 forward is one of the finest players in the league. He is the best rebounder in the league, currently averaging 15.1 boards per game. Clayton is also an elite scorer, he ranks 5th in the league with 18.5 points per game. Another player that the Nix need to watch out for is Mike McCall JR. He is Manchester’s playmaker, he ranks 8th in the league in assists with 5.5 dimes per game.

C.J Gettys will be expected to challenge Clayton on the glass, the Phoenix big man ranks 5th in the league in rebounds, with 9.4 per game. The team shot well from the three-point line against the Rocks last time out, Daniel Norl in particular was on fire from beyond the arc, he made four out of eight shots. The team needs to take their form into the Giants game and try to hit a high percentage again.

The Nix are known for playing selfless basketball, but in their last encounter against the Rocks, the team racked up just 12 assists. That number must improve on Friday. The team must also take good care of the ball and avoid silly turnovers in order to secure a priceless win against the Giants.
