THE MICKEY CLIFFORD OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD

Volunteers have been at the heart of our club since our inception in 1984. Without our dedicated, tireless and passionate volunteers, Cheshire Phoenix would not exist.

In association with our sponsors – Mickey’s Boatyard and Beach Café – we wanted to show our appreciation today by announcing the winner of the Mickey Clifford Outstanding Contribution Award.

The award is named after Mickey Clifford – a dearly loved and charismatic volunteer from our days at the Northgate Arena in Chester – and it recognizes the outstanding work of our volunteers.

Mickey had a great passion for our team, always had time for everyone, and went about his volunteering with unending enthusiasm.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s winner of the award is Barry Ashworth.

Barry is one of the most devoted fans around, having followed the club for over 20 years. He has also been an incredible volunteer for the past 16 years.

Barry is an employee at Ellesmere Port Sports Village – the home of the Cheshire Phoenix – and volunteers as part of our game night court crew on his days off.  He also does a tremendous job in supporting the coaching staff and the players whenever possible during the week leading up to our home fixtures.

Phoenix Head Coach, Ben Thomas, congratulated Barry on his much-deserved award.

Head Coach Ben Thomas: “We really do have a great group of volunteers, but Barry really is one of the most hard-working! Not only does he do a huge amount on game day, setting up the court amongst other things but he also manages to help throughout the week whilst balancing his job at the same time. He’s a huge asset to all of us at the club and he fully deserves this recognition! Congrats Baz!”

Following today’s announcement, Barry admitted that he was taken aback when he found out that he had won the award.

Barry Ashworth: “I would like to thank the club for this award, I didn’t expect it at all. I just do what I can to help along with the rest of the volunteers. Let’s hope we can all get back on court as soon and safe as possible? Thank you again ???”
