Nix add Danny Byrne as new Assistant Coach

Cheshire Phoenix is happy to announce that Danny Byrne has agreed to join the coaching team as our new Assistant Coach.

After a flurry of new player signings in the past few weeks, Head Coach Ben Thomas has also been busy adding to his backroom staff ahead of the 2021/22 BBL season, with former Manchester Giants Head Coach Danny Byrne joining the Nix.

Danny took the Head Coaching reigns at Manchester in 2017 and guided the Giants to the semi-finals of both the BBL Trophy and BBL Cup in 2018. He parted ways with the club in March 2021.

Danny Byrne:

“I am really honoured to have been asked by Ben to come on board as an assistant coach for the new season.

“I have always had a huge amount of respect for Ben and the Phoenix as an organisation having battled against each other over the years.

“Cheshire are a club that are always in and amongst the playoff spots and with the squad that is being put together for next season, it is one I am really excited to be able to work with and support Ben and the club the best I can.”

Ben Thomas:

“Me and Danny came into the league at similar times and we would frequently talk about lots of different things and ultimately built up a friendship.

“He has been one of my main competitors over the past few years mainly due to the Northwest Derby and all the weight that carries with it. Danny has been able to bring some really talented players to the BBL and at times has had some really good results and performances!

“I think having another head coach on the sidelines with me as an assistant will be really beneficial but also will really help with our preparation leading up to games.”
